One of the key tasks was to establish the 2005 Sunrise Date, which educated US businesses on the need of enabling their systems to read 14-digits (GTINs). Because current scanners can now read both EAN and UPC standards tags, there will never be a reason to place the two types on the same item. Organizations in the United States should only use the UPC scanner tag.
